Kirk Cousins is set to potentially become a free agent. Here are five teams that should sign the breakout quarterback.

Kirk Cousins played lights out this season. This season, Cousins’ 69.8 completion percentage was good enough to led the entire NFL.

This past year was Cousins’ first time being a starter for a full season and it was the last year of his rookie contract. His crazy statistics this season ensures that he will receive a huge payday this offseason. Cousins had a season that only great quarterbacks have, and as a result he will expect to be paid like a great quarterback.

Although Cousins’ contract has expired, it is highly unlikely the Washington Redskins will let their homegrown talent leave. The NFL has a shortage of quality quarterbacks, and Cousins appears to be at the very least an above average talent.

However, the emergence of Kirk Cousins has created a difficult situation for the Redskins. Prior to this season, Cousins has displayed potential, but he never showed definitive signs of being a franchise player. What this means is that the Redskins have the difficult task of evaluating whether Cousins’ performance this season is repeatable.

If the Redskins believe that Cousins can maintain his production from this season, then the team should have no problem handing him a monster contract. On the other hand, if the Redskins decide that they are unsure of Cousins’ ability to maintain his level of play, then allowing free agency to set his value might be the better option.

The Redskins also have a third option. The team can decide that they want Cousins to prove that he can be a top tier player and they franchise tag him. This will give Cousins close to a salary close $20 million for the upcoming season and they can delay signing him long term till next year. By doing this route, the Redskins will have another year of time to evaluate Cousins’ ability to be a franchise quarterback.

If the Kirk Cousins makes it in to free agency, here are five teams that could realistically sign him.
