The Boston Celtics reportedly tried acquiring Jimmy Butler at the deadline.

Danny Ainge has never been afraid to be bold as all hell when trying to make a trade. Sometimes it works, like when he acquired Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen — and also when he traded them away. Sometimes it doesn’t work, which is what we saw happen at this year’s NBA trade deadline.

According to Steve Bulpett of The Boston Herald, the Celtics offered two first-round picks to the Bulls in a package for Jimmy Butler.

There were a ton of rumors leading up to the deadline that Boston was looking to make a big splash as far as trades were concerned but everyone assumed that involved Kevin Love. This might not be the splash trade everyone was talking about but it’s up there as far as bold offers go.

Simply put:there is no way in hell the Bulls would even entertain the idea of trains Butler, but the Celtics need to be credited of both trying and presenting a halfway decent deal.

If the Bulls are looking to rebuild — which they might have to do — then pocketing two choice first-round draft picks isn’t a bad start. That being said, there’s no reason why Butler can’t and won’t be the centerpiece the team is built around moving forward, so trading him away defeats the entire purpose.
