5 free agency destinations for Andre Drummond
By John Buhler
With starting center Hassan Whiteside hitting free agency this summer and starting power forward Chris Bosh’s health unfortunately in question again, what are the Miami Heat going to do if Whiteside walks and Bosh’s career has to come to a close prematurely because of blood clots?
Miami in that situation would have to act fast on the free agent market to amplify its starting frontcourt to stay competitive in the Eastern Conference. One logical solution to Miami’s supposed frontcourt woes would be to sign Detroit Pistons center Andre Drummond to a maximum contract.
He could form a dynamic pick-and-roll partnership with long-term point guard Goran Dragic for head coach Erik Spoelstra. Miami would need to find other ways to upgrade their offensive efficiency, particularly if the Heat lose Bosh for health reasons.
However, bringing in Drummond to the fold would give the Heat a better version of what they somewhat have in Whiteside. Whiteside is a good, throwback center, but Drummond has the potential to be better than Dwight Howard and be the second-best center in the NBA outside of DeMarcus Cousins with the Sacramento Kings.
Drummond to Miami would give the Heat another centerpiece to build a new championship-caliber team around, especially if rookie wing Justise Winslow becomes a star one day like many have forecasted. Given that Spoelstra is already a great defensive coach and has already won two NBA Championships in Miami, he could in theory win a few with Drummond as his starting center should he sign with the Heat in free agency.
