The Los Angeles Lakers pulled off the biggest regular season upset in NBA history Sunday afternoon when they topped the Golden State Warriors, 112-95.
Entering play Sunday afternoon, who would have thought that the lowly Los Angeles Lakers would have stood a chance against the best team in basketball in the Golden State Warriors? The Lakers on the great play of point guard Marcelo Huertas and shooting guard Nick Young were able to pull off the biggest upset in a regular season game in NBA history, 112-95 over Golden State.
Golden State simply could not buy a bucket from outside, shooting an abysmal 13.3% on the team’s three point attempts (4-30). That and turning the basketball over a staggering 20 times allowed the Lakers to take down the goliath Warriors Sunday afternoon at Staples Center.
This was the first time in NBA history that a team with a winning percentage below .200 beat a team with a winning percentage over .900. While Golden State could still set the NBA record with 73 wins in a regular season and the Lakers could still win the 2016 NBA Draft Lottery with one of the worst records in the league, on Sunday the worse team won in shocking fashion. It wasn’t even close.
Here are some of the highlights in the biggest regular season upset in NBA history, as the Lakers dismantled the Warriors, 112-95 at Staples Center on a nationally televised broadcast.
Overall, this was not the result many of us were expecting in the Sunday tipoff between the Lakers and the Warriors on ABC. While it wasn’t another brilliant performance from the perimeter by the Splash Brothers, for those that are just fans of the NBA, this historic upset certainly didn’t disappoint. The Lakers simply outclassed Golden State and everybody saw it on national television.
