With the NBA salary cap set to explode next summer, it makes sense for most impending free agents to re-up with their current teams on one-year deals before breaking the bank in a year. One player that should go with that same line of thinking is small forward Chandler Parsons of the Dallas Mavericks.

Parsons seems to really like playing for the Mavericks under head coach Rick Carlisle, alongside certain Hall of Famer Dirk Nowitzki and for eccentric billionaire owner Mark Cuban. If he exercises his player option, Parsons will make more than $16 million in 2016-17. If that’s not enough, he could negotiate for a few more millions on a new one-year deal to stay with the Mavericks.

While the current incarnation of the Mavericks isn’t championship caliber in the slightest, perhaps Parsons wants to play alongside Nowitzki for the rest of the German sharpshooter’s career and become the ambassador for the team once Nowitzki decides to call it a career.

Parsons did try to court native Texan DeAndre Jordan to the Mavericks last summer, and he could potentially get other impending free agents to play alongside him in Dallas next season.

Dallas is one of those teams that is never bad under Cuban’s ownership. It is a marquee destination for impending free agents because players like the culture in place with the Mavericks. Parsons has immense value with the team and should stay with the club in 2016-17 be either opting into his player option or renegotiating a one-year deal to stay in Dallas. He’s a strong building block for the team going forward, and the Mavs would hate to see him leave in free agency.
