5 reasons DeMarco Murray to the Titans is the best fit
5. Tennessee needed a No. 1 running back
The Titans are just in the beginning stages of a long rebuild, and have multiple holes on the roster that will need to be addressed in the draft over the next couple of seasons. After selecting a potential franchise quarterback in Marcus Mariota last year, running back stands out as one of the biggest weaknesses remaining on the roster.
Murray isn’t the long-term answer of course, and may only be able to provide one or two good years. However, Murray will instantly become the top running back on the Titans’ depth chart and should be a big improvement to their offense given how weak the position was last year.
Two years ago, the Titans selected Bishop Sankey with the No. 54 overall pick (the first running back taken off the board that season), and it looked like he had the upside to be a feature back down the line. Unfortunately, Sankey has struggled in his brief NFL career, while other backs of the class of 2014 like Jeremy Hill and Devonta Freeman have panned out.
That led to the Titans having just about no threat of a running game for much of the 2015 season. Second-year back Antonio Andrews led Tennessee with 520 rushing yards, while Mariota was the team’s second leading rusher.
Tennessee went over 100 rushing yards just six times in 2015, while the running backs averaged well under four yards per attempt. Overall, the Titans put up 18.7 points per game last season, and the lack of a running threat was a major contributor to their 3-13 record.
Murray doesn’t solve all of those problems by himself, but even at his current level will represent a major upgrade to the offense. The Titans need to make improvements wherever they can to get their rebuild going, and Murray will at least partially help them do that.
