NFL Rumors: Is Cameron Wake done with the Miami Dolphins?

With recent moves, are the Miami Dolphins ready to cut ties with star defensive end Cameron Wake?

In recent years, the Miami Dolphins have gone out of their way to be the champions of the offseason. The ownership of Stephen Ross and the “leadership” of the various general managers that have come through the franchise in the last five seasons have shown they are willing to spend what it takes to get big name free agents to take their talents to South Florida.

While the results haven’t shown on the field (no winning seasons since 2008 and just two seasons with records at .500), that isn’t stopping the Dolphins from continuing that tradition. The latest move involves signing defensive end Mario Williams, a former top overall draft pick who was cut just days ago by the Buffalo Bills, to a two year contract with Miami.

On paper, it’s an added bonus to a position (defensive line) that, quite frankly, is the least position of need for the Miami Dolphins. With Cameron Wake and Olivier Vernon on the ends and Ndamukong Suh in the middle, it’s a wonder why the team would make a move like this.

That is, until you read the perspective from CBS NFL insider Jason La Canfora:

Miami put the transition tag on fourth year veteran Vernon last week, allowing them to match any offers from other teams (the same move they did for tight end Charles Clay before losing him to the Buffalo Bills in the 2015 offseason). So far, there has been no serious reports of any team making a run at the defensive end once free agency starts on Wednesday afternoon.

Wake is coming off a 2015 season that was cut short after suffering a ruptured Achilles injury in a Week Eight loss to the New England Patriots. Wake had seven sacks for the Miami Dolphins before his injury, giving him 70 total sacks for his seven year career with the team. At 34 years old, he isn’t much higher on the age bracket than Williams, but it may be just enough for the Dolphins to decide it’s time to move on.
