Argentine manager Mauricio Pochettino receives contract offer from Tottenham.
Tottenham Hotspur have made many good moves in the past year and a half. First of all, they kept Harry Kane around, one of the most prolific goal-scorers in England. They have also managed to uncover some of the best young talent in the Premier League the past couple of seasons in Deli Alli and Eric Dier. While Tottenham has been making smart decisions the past couple of seasons, this could be their best decision yet.
According to ESPNFC, the Spurs have offered 44-year-old Mauricio Pochettino a new contract that extends beyond his current contract of three and a half years. His initial contract with the club was for five years and he has served 18 months of that contract. But Tottenham want to keep this young manager around for longer than three and a half more years. In his short time with the club, Pochettino has managed to move the Spurs reputation from an average team to a top club in the Premier League. He has them five points off of the top of league, behind Leicester City. He has coached this team to fulfill its full potential at certain times. With age and experience they will continue to improve and become more consistent in their play.
We have seen glimpses of how good this Spurs team can be. We saw it last week when the Spurs took on Arsenal and were down 1-0. In just two minutes the Spurs scored twice to take a 2-1 lead. The best way to see how Pochettino has gotten the best out of this team was when Deli Alli outworked the Arsenal defender to win the ball back, and Harry Kane showed why he is a top attacker in the world.
This goal not only proved the immense talent of Kane, but how much of an effect Pochettino has had on his young squad. His style of coaching is to work his players as hard as they can be worked. It is said that superstars wouldn’t like his style of coaching because during training, his players run the whole time. He works his players to death. But as the Spurs showed in the brief instance on Saturday, it pays off.
Keeping Pochettino is huge for the Spurs. Not only has he brought the club success, but he will continue to do so. This Spurs team may not win the league this season, but this manager is talented enough to keep this club in the top tier of English football for a long time. He knows how to maximize potential and knows how to instill confidence in young players and get the most out of them.
Pochettino has been linked with clubs such as Real Madrid, Chelsea and Manchester United. The Spurs put an end to those talks and have indicated to Pochettino that they want him around for quite awhile.
The contract details will be discussed between the club and manager following the end of the Premier League and Europa League seasons.
