4. He keeps them in contention in AFC South

The good thing about the AFC South is that anyone can win it. That’s what happened in 2015, when the Texans won the AFC South, despite barely having a winning record. The Indianapolis Colts missing Andrew Luck played a big part in the Texans’ success, but make no mistake about it, the division can still be had.

The Texans have pieces to compete on defense led by J.J. Watt, but if they wanted to remain in contention to keep winning the division, the needed someone better than Brian Hoyer at the quarterback spot. If there was one major glaring flaw for the Texans last season, it was the quarterback spot.

By adding Osweiler, the Texans have their quarterback that will allow them to keep competing for division championships. If he takes off and becomes the quarterback that the Texans are paying him to be, then they could potentially compete for possibly even more.

Osweiler might only have a small sample size as a quarterback in the NFL, but he’s a significant upgrade from Hoyer and will be someone that Bill O’Brien should be able to coach up and succeed with. He’s an intriguing talent and the Texans might have just become favorites in the division.
