David Wain and Michael Showalter show us what 70s cinema looks like through their eyes, and its amazing even though it’s not real.

The two men behind Wet Hot American Summer — David Wain and Michael Showalter — have teamed up to make a loving tribute trailer to 70s American cinema.

As best as can be figured in the scant three minutes, 55 seconds of the trailer for Second Sound Barrier, the (fake) movie tells the story of three men determined to break the titular (fictional) barrier in order to gain the favor of a beautiful billionaire.

That these three men — played by Six Feet Under‘s Jeremy Sisto, Mad Men‘s Vincent Kartheiser and a-bit-of-everything’s Peter Mensah — plan on doing so in automobiles that may or may not be driven by adorable bulldogs instead of, say, rockets piloted by humans tells you just about all you need to know about how amazing a movie this would be.

Unfortunately, we’ll never be able to feel what it’s like to follow this trio of daredevils (not to mention the mysterious billionaire played by Juliette Lewis, an FBI agent played by Ken Marino and a scientist played by Eastbound and Down‘s Steven Little) around for the full run time of an actual movie, as this is a decidedly fake production.

Wain and Showalter teamed up with Catfish producers Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman to give us just the barest sliver of what a tribute to 1970s bravado and paper-thin sci-fi premises made by members of The State would look like.

Assuming it ends up being anything more than a fantastic trailer, The Second Sound Barrier will debut on March 11th at SecondSoundBarrier.com.
