The New York Jets are trying to strike a deal for San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin kaepernick.

The Jets came into the offseason with a bunch of high-profile free agents including Damon Harrison, Muhammad Wilkerson and Ryan Fitzpatrick. While Harrison left and Wilkerson was given the franchise tag, Fitgzpatrick was left to dangle. We might know why.

New York is trying to win its first Super Bowl for the first time since 1968, giving it one of the longest droughts in the National Football League. The Jets have talent on both sides of the ball, but have not been able ot put all the pieces together at one time.

Last year, Kaepernick was benched in San Francisco by head coach Jim Tomsula, who replaced him with the much-maligned Blaine Gabbert. The 49ers then put Kaepernick on injured reserve. San Francisco general manager Trent Baalke has been actively shopping Kaepernick to teams after the 28-year-old declared he wanted to be traded.

New York is trying to get back into the playoffs after narrowly missing last season with a 10-6 record. Fitzpatrick had a career year for Gang Green, throwing for 3,905 yards and 31 touchdowns against 15 interceptions. However, Fitzpatrick is 33 years old and many view him as a journeyman quarterback who can’t lead a team deep into the playoffs.

The Jets have a pair of quality receivers in Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker, but the offensive line is unsettled and the running game is in flux with Chris Ivory leaving in free agency.
