WINNER: Kansas City Chiefs

Kansas City was able to retain not only some of its best players, but the top men in the league. General manager John Dorsey began the offseason with $34 million to work with and spent most of it on his own players, keeping Eric Berry (franchise tag), Derrick Johnson, Jaye Howard and Tamba Hali in the fold.

Additionally, Dorsey went out and signed right tackle Mitchell Schwartz to a five-year deal worth $33 million. Schwartz is one of the best pass-blockers in the game today and provides Alex Smith with a much-needed pillar on the right side, after being sacked 46 times last year. With Schwartz in tow, Dorsey hit a home run.

LOSER: Miami Dolphins

It just never seems to end with the boys in South Beach. The Dolphins went out and acquired both Byron Maxwell and linebacker Kiko Alonso in a trade with the Philadelphia Eagles, taking on a large contract in Maxwell and swapping first-round picks (moving back five spots). Miami also restructured Ndamukong Suh’s contract to sign Mario Williams, both moves that will hurt in the future.

Miami allowed both Olivier Vernon and Lamar Miller to escape its clutches while signing tackle Jermon Bushrod. Bushrod is a declining player who now forces the Dolphins to either kick Branden Albert or former first-round pick Ju’Wuan James to guard. It makes no sense, but that sticks with the Dolphins.
