Get ready for Captain America: Civil War by learning more about who’s on Team Cap, and why they might be siding with Captain America.

May 6 is getting closer all the time, and if you’re a fan of the Marvel Cinematic universe, you’ve already got that date circled on your calendar, or an alert on your phone, or whatever you need to do to ensure you don’t forget about the release of Captain America: Civil War. Though Chris Evans will take the starring role as Captain America, there’s a reason that some people have semi-seriously called the movie “Avengers 2.5.”

Due to the huge, very public battles in previous MCU films, the understandably nervous governments of the world are going to demand some accountability from the Avengers in the form of the Sokovia Accords. Captain America and Iron Man are going to have their own, very different views about whether the heroes should fall in line, forcing the others to take sides in a disagreement that is going to turn physical.

The big question is who’s on whose side, and the trailers and interviews released over the past few months have already given us a pretty good idea of the answer. We’ll start here by examining who decides to stand with Steve in reverse alphabetical order.

Who’s on Team Cap

  • Winter Soldier (Bucky Barnes) – This one is a given, since ensuring Bucky is brought back to the side of the angels has been a focus for Steve since the end of Captain America: The Winter Soldier. He’s Cap’s best friend since the World War II era and will owe Steve a huge debt to boot.
  • Scarlet Witch (Wanda Maximoff) – Hard to know for sure, but it’s quite possible Wanda still holds a grudge against Tony Stark, something that was first explored in Avengers: Age of Ultron.
  • Hawkeye (Clint Barton) – Though Clint has been a company guy his whole career in the MCU, the Hydra infiltration of SHIELD may have caused him to reconsider somewhat. Jeremy Renner told USA Today that “Cap was the first guy who called,” which is a very practical way of looking at things.
  • Falcon (Sam Wilson) – Sam has been a partner and confidant to Steve on his hunt for Bucky, even if their friendship doesn’t go nearly as far back as it does in the comics. Still, it’s natural he’d side with Cap.
  • Captain America (Steve Rogers) – It’s his team! Civil War will complete Steve’s 180-degree swing from a soldier who always follows orders to someone who’s willing to stick to his principles, regardless of the cost. The events of Captain America: The Winter Soldier have given him plenty of reason not to trust governments.
  • Ant-Man (Scott Lang) – Scott met Sam in his own solo movie, so his bonds are with the people on this side already. Plus he’s got more than bit of an anti-authority streak.

As shown in the concept art above, Agent 13 (Sharon Carter) has also been shown as a member of Team Cap, but she hasn’t figured too heavily into any of the trailers or other promotional material. It’s possible her role has been reduced.

With both Iron Man and War Machine on the opposite side, not to mention the Vision with the Mind Stone, Team Cap could be lacking a bit in the raw power department, but at least they won’t need any more inspiration being led by Captain America. We’ll see if that’s enough to prevail against Team Iron Man when Captain America: Civil War blasts into theaters soon.
