2016 NCAA Tournament: South Region Capsule

The brackets are unveiled! Let the games begin!

More from College Basketball Odds

For those of you that do the bracket games, I will unveil all of my picks by Wednesday night. For those of you that play the round by round games, I will also put my picks out there after every round as well. There will be something for everyone!

In the preview, I will give you a favorite, and dark horse team, which would be a four seed or higher than could win the region. A team to watch for, overseeded and underseeded teams, and of course, a double digit seed most likely to win one or more games.

Just in case you missed any:
Midwest Region
East Region

Now, on to the South regional.

Favorite: Kansas. Those that aren’t taking North Carolina are mostly taking Kansas. After all, they are the top overall seed. You wouldn’t know it by the bracket they are in. Maryland, Cal, Arizona, Miami, and Connecticut are all in this region! Talk about a tough road!

Watch out for: California: Yes, they lost ten games, but most of those were earlier in the season. This is a young team with NBA talent that is playing very well right now. They remind me of Kentucky two years ago. They have a great shot to make it to Houston. They are that good.

Dark Horse: Maryland. The Terrapins aren’t the most consistent team around, but as they showed in the Big Ten tournament, they are a tough team if they are playing well. And they are. Cal-Maryland, if it happens, could be the best game of the opening weekend.

Begging To Be Upset: Villanova. Wow, this was a brutal draw for them. Iowa or Temple could stop the Wildcats from getting out of the first weekend. If they do, then they get Arizona or Miami, neither of which they match up well against. It could be a short march for Nova.

Overseeded: Iowa. Yes, I get it. It is for the whole body of work, but Iowa played so poorly down the stretch that they nearly became a bubble team. Seven is rather generous.

Underseeded: Temple. They won the AAC regular season title, and got a lower seed than automatic bid Connecticut. I don’t really argue with their seeding, but if I had to pick one, it would be the Owls.

Cinderella: South Dakota State. The Jackrabbits’ RPI is almost as good as Maryland’s, but wow, they got a tough draw. They don’t match up well with Maryland, but the whole team can shoot. I thought SDSU had a shot at an 11 seed. They are going to give Maryland a fight, and anytime that happens in the first weekend, upset are a possibility.
