8. Chargers sign WR Travis Benjamin

Contract: 4 years and $24 million, $13 million guaranteed

Playing for the Browns last year, Benjamin was one of the few bright spots on a roster filled with holes and disappointment. As the no. 1 receiver, he put up very respectable numbers with 68 catches for 966 yards and five touchdowns. This contract is a job well done by the Chargers and Benjamin’s representatives, as it is a fair number for both sides. Benjamin was expected to re-sign with the Browns, but he is a better fit with the Chargers.

Benjamin will get the chance to play to his strengths on the Chargers. While he filled in admirably as a no. 1 WR last season, that isn’t who Benjamin is. At 5-foort-10 and about 175 lbs., Benjamin is a speedy deep threat who can make big plays given the opportunity.

The Chargers are almost a perfect landing spot for him. He gets to work with Keenan Allen and Antonio Gates, both possession receivers who will demand attention and allow Benjamin to take the top off of the defense. Benjamin’s speed adds a new element to the Chargers offense that they didn’t have before. Additionally, Benjamin goes from the Browns QB carousel to a talented, established veteran in Philip Rivers.
