Former ESPN employee and Holy Cross alum Bill Simmons tried to troll the Crusaders’ first round opponent, the Oregon Ducks … but failed miserably.
It’s going to happen someday. There will come a time where a 16th seed in the NCAA Basketball Tournament is going to pull the upset over a number one seed. We’ve had 15th seeds beat number two seeds, but never once has a 16th seed been able to get a win.
It doesn’t look like that will be the case again this season, with three of the top seeds emerging victorious on Thursday (Kansas, UNC and Virginia). Friday, the last number one seed takes the court when the Oregon Ducks take on a Holy Cross Crusaders team that is 15-19 on the season and had to win a First Four game to get to this point.
Still, fans and alumni of the school have faith that they will be the first team to do it. One of the more high profile graduates of late has been sports personality Bill Simmons. The Boston-area sports homer tried to take a shot at the Ducks ahead of Friday’s game with a tweet showing the Holy Cross team that won the national title in 1947:

There is just one problem: Oregon DOES have a national championship in basketball, which fans kindly reminded Simmons about:
@BillSimmons Here it is. See you at 4:27 PST. Game On!! pic.twitter.com/TnRhcz6mOd

The downfall about leaving ESPN must be that Simmons had to let go whichever member of his staff was in charge of fact checking items before he posts them on social media. Oregon and Holy Cross will tip off Friday evening around 7:45 PM from Spokane, Washington.
