Jim Boeheim went off when his players were asked about deserving to be in March Madness, calling doubters ‘cute’
Jim Boeheim and the Syracuse Orange had a rough regular season to a certain degree as they finished with just 19-13 record, largely due to a slow start while Boeheim was suspended. However, they Orange were given a berth in March Madness on Selection Sunday and proved that they deserved it in the First Round on Friday as they took it to the Dayton Flyers for a 19-point victory.
After the big win for Boeheim and Syracuse in the post-game press conference, Trevor Cooney and Michael Gbinije were asked about the people who said that the Orange didn’t deserve to be there and what this win meant in that context. Before they could answer, Boeheim chimed in that anyone who thought that “didn’t know anything about basketball” and called that line of thinking “trying to be cute:”
Given the situation with Syracuse getting in despite possibly not being deserving of the berth given their regular season resume, you knew something like this was coming from Boeheim. He’s not the type of guy to hold his tongue and/or let that kind of talk in the media go unnoticed. He certainly proved that point with this quote—with the added bonus of saying this in response to a question that wasn’t asked to him.
Here’s to more Boeheim in March Madness as the Orange are still alive.
