Dion Phaneuf gets Sam Reinhart with hit to the head (Video)
Ottawa Senators Dion Phaneuf is likely to get a call from the NHL this weekend after a hit to the head on Sabres Sam Reinhart.
Ottawa Senators newly-arrived tough guy Dion Phaneuf appeared to have Buffalo Sabres rookie Sam Reinhart lined up for one of his signature open-ice hits with 7:11 left in the game Friday night.
You can see that, not surprisingly, Phaneuf hits him high with his shoulder and the main contact is to the head. Phaneuf was given a two-minute penalty for an illegal hit to the head, and it’s probably a good bet that the NHL will be calling Phaneuf soon.
The Sabres’ heavy-man, Zach Bogosian, decided immediately that he wasn’t going to wait for the NHL to act, and tried to hand out his own supplementary discipline. He bum-rushed Phaneuf from across the ice, took him down hard and tried to keep him down. The look he gives Phaneuf after the linesmen pulled him off is perfect.
Sabres head coach Dan Bylsma also had a few words to say about the hit after the game.
Now we wait and see how early on Saturday the folks in Toronto make the call to the Maple Leafs’ former Captain.
As a nice side note for Reinhart, he and the other Buffalo rookie, Jack Eichel, joined a list that includes Gilbert Perreault and Danny Gare. With the first goal of the night he reached 20 for the season. With Eichel sitting at 22 goals so far, they become the third pair of Buffalo rookies to reach the 20-goal milestone and first since 1975.
