The Northern Iowa Panthers upset the Texas Longhorns thanks to a buzzer-beater halfcourt heave from Paul Jesperson

The No. 11 seed Northern Iowa Panthers went on a run at the end of the first half to go up by eight points at halftime on the No. 6 seed Texas Longhorns in the First Round of March Madness on Friday. However, Texas tied the game for yet another time after fighting back on a lay-up with 2.7 seconds left on the clock. That was more than enough time for Paul Jesperson to hit the shot of the tournament thus far for Northern Iowa.

Wes Washpun missed his second free throw for Northern Iowa, allowing Isaiah Taylor to tie the game up for Texas. Northern Iowa elected not to call timeout, though, and instead inbounded the ball to the senior guard Jesperson. He cut with a couple of dribbles to the center-circle at mid-court and got off a relatively uncontested heave that, in true March Madness fashion, banked in after he got it off well in time to secure the upset:

Though there have been bigger upsets, that shot by Jesperson is the moment of the tournament thus far. That’s the type of play that lasts forever in the memories of every college basketball fan and certainly for Jesperson as the hero of this game.

The Panthers will now move on in March Madness to face the Texas A&M Aggies, but they can enjoy the moment of the tournament on Friday night.
