Ranking the eight No. 15 vs No. 2 upsets in March Madness history
2. Florida Gulf Coast: 78, Georgetown: 68 (2013)
If these upsets were being ranked solely on style points in how the winning team pulled out the win, the Florida Gulf Coast Eagles back in 2013 would be at the top of the list and it wouldn’t even be close. When No. 15 FGCU, a school that many college basketball fans didn’t even know existed until the 2013 NCAA Tournament, walked up to Georgetown at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia and showed absolutely no fear as Dunk City was born.
While there are often attractive monikers attached to big moments like the Florida Gulf Coast upset, the Dunk City name was apt to the highest degree. The Eagles under now USC Trojans head coach Andy Enfield weren’t going to try and use the Princeton offense to wear down the Hoyas, but instead were going to go right at the rim and see if they could catch them off guard. They certainly did that and the result was highlight dunks and highlight alley-oops coming seemingly one after the other.
With Dunk City being born, there may not have been a more exciting upset in the No. 15 vs. No. 2 matchup in history. However, the upset as a whole is a bit hurt by the fact that Georgetown was generously seeded as a No. 2 and, given the upset at the top of these rankings, the quality of the No. 2 seed matters. Even still, you can never take away just how special and enthralling Florida Gulf Coast was.
