5. Messi could be the pioneer for the rest of the soccer world.

If Lionel Messi were to come to America within the next couple years, he could set a precedent for the rest of the world.

It seems like it’s almost a default that after a player’s career is done abroad, they can come to America and earn some extra money before retiring. Imagine if someone of the caliber of Messi came to America in the prime of his career.

Not only would he be the first of his kind, he would definitely cause other European talent to think about the option of coming to America early. It would also cause MLS to think about how to even out the league, because obviously the team to get Messi would have an advantage, but that’s another point.

But if a player sets a precedent and MLS needs to go out and get more talent, then gradually, more and more players would follow the trend, come to America and it would even out the talent.

Eventually, a big name European player has to be signed by an MLS team in their, or close to, their prime. If Messi were to be the first, he could bring others with him and be the first of his kind.
