Fernando Alonso walks away from horrifying crash (Video)
McLaren Team driver Fernando Alonso walked away from what could have been a career ending crash in today’s Australian Grand Prix.
The FIA has done a tremendous job in making sure today’s Formula One drivers are safe in almost all circumstances. Everyone watching the race today saw that in action when Fernando Alonso walked away from an accident that looked truly horrifying.
Going into the third corner, under braking, he attempted to overtake Haas Team racer Esteban Gutierrez. His front wheel clipped Gutierrez’s rear wheel, and Alonso was suddenly an unwilling passenger in his own race car.
He first slammed hard into the wall, then careened uncontrollably through the gravel trap, flipping through the air at least twice. His car came to rest leaning upside down against racing barrier in the infield.
Everyone held there breath hoping for the best, but they didn’t have to hold it long. Seconds after the car stopped moving and the smoke had cleared, Alonso crawled out from underneath what was left of his McLaren, limping a bit but waving to the crowd.
Gutierrez, who’s car came to a safe stop right-side-up in the gravel, immediately went over to Alonso to shake his hand before. Both drivers were to the medical center, where they were both cleared and released.
Alonso even felt well enough after his scary ride to give post-race interviews. Here’s what he said, via The Daily Mail.
"“I am lucky to be here and thankful to be here. It was a scary moment and a scary crash. When I stopped I saw a little space to get out of the car and I went out quickly just to make sure that my mum, who was watching the race on TV at home, could see that I was okay”"
The FIA race stewards investigated the crash, but found neither driver to be at fault.
