March Madness bracket 2016: Oklahoma advances past VCU to Sweet 16
A look at the 2016 March Madness bracket after Oklahoma defeated VCU to advance to the Sweet 16
The Oklahoma Sooners may very well have had many fans around the country already putting them into the Sweet 16 with a Sharpie at halftime of their Second Round March Madness game against the VCU Rams. The Sooners were up by 13 points and had already withstood one comeback in the first half at that point. However, they play 40 minutes in March Madness for a reason and VCU showed exactly why.
The Rams came out of the locker room firing and throwing wild punches at the Sooners to start the second half and looked completely unwilling to be the latest March Madness casualty. Thanks to huge efforts from JeQuan Lewis and Melvin Johnson, VCU was able to climb back into it to the point that the two teams were going back-and-forth for the lead for roughly the final 10 minutes of the game.
In the end, though, National Players of the Year candidate Buddy Hield for Oklahoma just came up too big in the biggest moment of the season for Sooners. He put up 27 points in the second half after only having eight in the first and helped the Sooners hold on to advance to the Sweet 16.
Now that Oklahoma is moving on to the next round, let’s take a look at the updated 2016 March Madness bracket to see where things stand and what could be on deck for the Sooners.
With Northern Iowa and Texas A&M still to play, the Sooners will have to wait to see who their opponent is in the Sweet 16 of 2016 March Madness. With what Hield is doing right now, though, the whole country will certainly be watching no matter who they play.
