The New Orleans Pelicans will shut down All-Star forward Anthony Davis for the rest of the season

It became apparent quickly that things might not go well for the New Orleans Pelicans in the 2015-16 NBA season. Their superstar in Anthony Davis got off to a slow start and the team around him struggled mightily in the first year under new head coach Alvin Gentry. After facing hardship all season, the year will now end on a sour note as well as Gentry announced on Sunday that the team is shutting Anthony Davis down for the rest of the season:

Davis is currently dealing with two separate injuries, one to his knee and one to his shoulder, the latest ailment popping up on Friday against the Portland Trail Blazers. The Pelicans had been awaiting word about the All-Star big man’s condition moving forward and, for whatever reason, this is the decision that they reached.

While not getting to see Anthony Davis for the last few weeks of the regular season, this really isn’t a hard choice for the Pelicans. The only thing that the team is playing for at this point is their position in the NBA Draft Lottery and potentially risking the long term health of your most important player really isn’t worth keeping him on the floor in this situation.

For the sake of all basketball fans, though, let’s hope that Anthony Davis can get healthy and take the floor next season with a Pelicans team better-built to succeed in the NBA.
