New York Jets, Giants owners wants to host another Super Bowl
By Jason Parker
The owners of both the New York Jets and New York Giants are looking to host another Super Bowl in the Big Apple.
Two years ago, the NFL finally broke with tradition and held their biggest game of the year, the annual Super Bowl, in an outdoor stadium in a cold-weather town. After years of hesitation, the league brought the game to the New York City area, holding it across the river in New Jersey at MetLife Stadium (home of the Jets and the Giants).
There was no snow on the ground and no freezing conditions (as the critics warned would take place) and the Seattle Seahawks won their first Super Bowl championship with a blowout victory over the Denver Broncos. The success of that week, with the biggest city in the country hosting the biggest day in sports, is inspiring the owners of both the Jets and Giants to make another effort to host the league’s championship game.
New York Jets owner Woody Johnson, speaking at the NFL owners meetings in Boca Raton, Florida, says both he and Giants CEO John Mara are committed to hosting another Super Bowl in the Big Apple and at their home stadium:
"“I think we did a good job. We put on a great stage,” Johnson said of hosting the biggest game of the season. “It wasn’t a great game, but it was a great stage and the weather was extremely good. We lucked out.“I think there would be because there’s nothing like New York. Just think of being in the city. I mean, to me, it’s the greatest city in the world. There’s always something going on, it’s always unbelievable. You never know what cool thing is going to be there. You’ve got Broadway, great shopping, as well as having a fabulous Super Bowl.”"
If New York City’s two NFL owners are successful in getting owners to vote on giving them another Super Bowl, it will be a little while before that game would take place. Next year’s big game takes place in Houston, while Minneapolis will host it the following year. After that, the league’s owners will decide on giving the next two Super Bowls to either Atlanta, Miami, New Orleans or Tampa.
Recently, the league has said Atlanta may be taken out of the running for future games in a controversial bill that would allow businesses to deny goods and services to customers based on that owner’s religious beliefs is signed into law by the Governor of Georgia.
