MLB Rumors: 5 teams that can talk Alex Rodriguez out of retirement
By John Buhler
Would Rodriguez fancy a sort of homecoming to the Pacific Northwest to the franchise that drafted him No. 1 overall in the 1993 Amateur Draft in the Seattle Mariners? Rodriguez spent his first seven big league seasons (1994-2000) playing for some of the best Mariners teams to date.
Since Seattle has been sleepless in the AL Postseason since 2001, now the longest active postseason drought in baseball, why not consider bringing back one of the franchise’s most prolific hitters to a team that hasn’t had a great offensive player in the last decade not named Ichiro Suzuki?
Didn’t Seattle pay a ridiculous sum of money to Rodriguez’s former teammate with the Yankees to get second baseman Robinson Cano? For better or worse, Rodriguez can still hit for a high average and it doesn’t matter all that much of his ball doesn’t carry like it use to now at age 41.
Seattle is a pitcher’s park if there ever was one and it can’t be all that crazy to bring in a veteran that has over 3,000 as a big leaguer and once starred for the Pacific Northwest’s lone MLB franchise. While this does sound a bit sacrilegious, Rodriguez will be a better player in his second stint in Seattle than was Ken Griffey, Jr. in 2010. The Mariners need hits. Perhaps for eight figures, Rodriguez could help them out.
