MLB Rumors: 5 teams that can talk Alex Rodriguez out of retirement
By John Buhler
Remember way back when the Yankees and the Red Sox were in the midst of a bidding war to sign MVP-level Rodriguez before the start of the 2004 MLB season? New York obviously came out on top and has been A-Rod’s employer ever since, but what if Boston got to have him for one final season?
Since the Red Sox’s future Hall of Fame designated hitter David Ortiz is too calling it a career at the end of the 2016 MLB season, if Big Papi is set on retirement and A-Rod can be bought for eight figures, would the Red Sox and Rodriguez be able to strike up a one-year deal in 2017 and be a warm body to designated hit for the Sox?
A-Rod has had a ton of experience hitting in Fenway Park as member of the arch rival Yankees in the American League East. Being that he’s a right-handed hitter, Rodriguez has the famous Green Monster to spray balls off to pad his tainted career batting statistics.
Given how Boston’s chemistry is either a dynamo or a powder keg in recent years, with the influx of young talent and somewhat of a veteran corps, could the Red Sox vie for another World Series Championship in 2017 with Rodriguez as their DH? Ideally, Boston would prefer to have Ortiz in that role, but what a story it would be if Rodriguez left the Yankees for the Red Sox even for just one season.
