Could Manchester City be the favorites to sign Lionel Messi if he doesn’t re-sign with Barcelona?

Manchester City has been making headlines and building up their net worth ever since they were bought in 2008 by the Abu Dhabi United Group. They have spent record amounts of money and have build Manchester City up to being the fifth most valuable soccer team in the world. That aggressiveness has led them to setting up for a run at FC Barcelona superstar forward Lionel Messi.

From Telegraph:

"The arrival at City next season of Pep Guardiola, working alongside the former Barcelona axis of chief executive Ferran Soriano and director of football Txiki Begiristain, also makes the club, they believe, the likely destination of any of Barca’s star players should they leave the Nou Camp."

Guardiola is the former manager of FC Barcelona, which could make Manchester City an attractive location for Barcelona’s stars — including Messi. Lionel Messi is not a free agent until after 2018, but City has the money necessary to either sign him in 2018 or enter the bidding should he be posted by Barcelona before then.

Messi would be an unbelievable addition for Manchester City. He has won the FIFA World Player of the Year five times and is a three-time winner of the European Golden Shoe.
