No. 3 New York Jets

The New York Jets have potentially cast themselves into a portal straight to mediocrity. If the Jets fail to re-sign Ryan Fitzpatrick, then the next quarterback up would be Geno Smith.

Smith being the quarterback who once threw three straight interceptions against the Buffalo Bills, finishing the game going two for eight passing, and a zero quarterback rating. Most New York Jets fans would probably all conclude that starting Smith is among their worst nightmares, only followed by having to watch the Mark Sanchez ‘butt-fumble’ on repeat.

However, if the Jets fail to re-sign Fitzpatrick, then the solution to the team’s quarterback quandary might be solved by trading for AJ McCarron.

Scheme Fit:

The New York Jets run a quarterback friendly scheme. The team’s offense is based on spread concepts that feature quick passes coming out of the shotgun. The Jets also have a boatload of weapons such as Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker, making life easier for a young signal caller.

Moreover, the Jets had a significantly explosive running game last year. McCarron would be allowed to develop and grow with the team instead of having to carry the team from day one.

Team Need:

Quarterback is definitely a position of need for the Jets. If New York ever wishes to contend for a playoff spot, then the team will eventually need to have a good quarterback. Unfortunately, getting a good young passer usually involves picking towards the top of the draft.

Since the Jets have too much talent on the team, a viable option to get a quarterback would be to trade for a young backup and hope the team can develop him into being ‘the guy.’

Ability for the Jets to acquire McCarron:

The Jets’ organization is not one to be known as ‘trade heavy’, but the team has made moves in the past when they believed that they could come out on top. It goes without saying that if you can make a trade to acquire a franchise player and not have to give up the farm, you do it.

An example of a trade for McCarron might be the Jets surrendering a fourth round pick this season, and getting McCarron straight up.
