Jason Heyward, Madison Bumgarner get into it in spring training (Video)
Prized Cubs signing Jason Heyward and Giants ace Madison Bumgarner got into a war of words on Thursday
On Thursday night in MLB spring training action, the Chicago Cubs and San Francisco Giants were facing off and, after a torrid first three innings that saw the score line creep up to 8-5 in favor of the Giants, the Cubs’ prized free-agent signing in Jason Heyward was in the box against San Francisco’s ace Madison Bumgarner. Even in spring training where the games mean a lot less, that’s still a fun matchup—at least until things almost go serious really quickly.
Bumgarner struck Heyward out looking on the at-bat and, after Heyward heard the call, he mouthed something in the direction of the mound and in Bumgarner’s general direction. Either because of what he said or because he didn’t hear him, the Giants ace was a bit upset at Heyward talking to him and stomped toward the Cubs star heading back to the dugout:
Because of the way that Bumgarner retreated after a brief discussion with Heyward and the umpires, you have to believe that he just didn’t understand what the Cubs slugger said to him and, once he found out, was cool with it and went back to the rubber. That being said, Heyward was none too pleased that the pitcher left the mound at all—whether he was clearing something up or not.
With things already getting heated in spring training, we’ll have to see if anything comes of this in the 162-game regular season.
