On Thursday night, Maryland Terrapins forward Jake Layman faced oppression from the officials for protecting himself.

Sometimes in sports, the officials make bad calls and end up ruining what could have been a great moment and instead place the discussion of the game squarely on their shoulders. With the Maryland Terrapins looking to pull off the upset against the No. 1 Kansas Jayhawks in the Sweet 16 on Thursday night, forward Jake Layman faced oppression from the officials for simply protecting himself.

As Layman made a beautiful steal with no one to beat, he threw down a slam with authority to extend the Terrapins’ lead early and get the crowd that traveled to Louisville fired up. After Layman came down, he was whistled for what was probably the worst technical ever for hanging on the rim.

"He got T’ed up, but Jake Layman threw this one down with authority. https://t.co/gGNsn5jfXE— CBS Sports (@CBSSports) March 25, 2016"

There was no blatant hanging at all by Layman, since he used two hands and was trying to brace his landing. If you notice, he dunks so hard his legs fly out from underneath him, which means that if he let go, he could have severely hurt himself.

So he waited that split second to get his legs in a good place and then came down. Instead, the officials decided an atrocity had taken place and that they must make sure that they make a statement.

Their statement was that they are pretty terrible.
