Michigan Stadium to host Chelsea-Real Madrid match this summer

Michigan Stadium will be the site for this summer’s Chelsea-Real Madrid match as part of the International Champions Cup.
For the last three years, some of the top soccer teams from across the world have taken part in the annual International Champions Cup. In 2016, 17 teams from both Europe and Australia will take part in the event, running from July 23rd to August 13th in North America, Australia and China.
Two years ago, Real Madrid and Manchester United met in one tournament game at Michigan Stadium, setting an attendance record for a soccer match in the United States (109,318).
This summer, the “Big House” in Ann Arbor will look to break that record when Real Madrid makes their return to the stadium to take on another traditional English power.
Thursday, it was announced that the Chelsea-Real Madrid game revealed earlier this week will take place at the home of the Michigan Wolverines on July 30th. Charlie Stillitano, chairman of Relevent Sports, revealed the location in a statement:
"We are ecstatic to be coming back to the University of Michigan. In 2014, Real Madrid and Manchester United set the record for largest attended soccer game and we expect another great crowd, as Real Madrid and Chelsea are two of the biggest and best teams in the world. This will be a marquee match of the tournament and we are excited to bring the ICC back to Michigan."
Michigan Stadium isn’t the only college field that will be used during this year’s tournament, as games will also take place at the home field of the Oregon Ducks, Ohio State Buckeyes and UCLA Bruins. The complete schedule of games being played in North America can be found here.
