What happened during the March Madness game between Gonzaga and Syracuse?

One of the games on Friday night with an Elite Eight berth on the line was the No. 11 Gonzaga Bulldogs taking on the No. 10 Syracuse Orange. The winner of this will play Virginia on Sunday for a chance to go to the Final Four.

Gonzaga had a hot start to the game against Syracuse. They had 18 points about mid-way through the first half but were slowed down a bit by the Orange as they locked in. The Bulldogs made another run, though, as ‘Cuse went over five minutes without scoring a point. However, the game would somehow stay close at halftime with Gonzaga up by just one point at 29-28.

To begin the second half, Syracuse had their own hot start, scoring six quick points to go take the lead. Gonzaga came roaring back with help from senior forward Kyle Wiltjer, though, and started to dominate the game. This would lead to the Bulldogs going ahead.

The game would get very close at the end. Gonzaga wasn’t hitting their baskets and Syracuse was forcing turnovers and grabbing rebounds with their tenacious defensive play. The Orange ended up taking the lead 61-60 with 19.8 seconds remaining. The Bulldogs got the last chance to score and as they had possession, the ball was stolen by Trevor Cooney. However, the referees said his foot landed out of bounds. The referees went back to check on it and still determined it Bulldogs ball. They could not get a clean shot off in their last opportunity, though.
