Updated 2016 NCAA Women’s Tournament bracket after South Carolina Sweet upset

There was a huge upset in the NCAA Women’s Tournament on Monday, as the South Carolina Gamecocks are out

At the time of this writing, all of the No. 1 seeds in the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament are still alive and kicking. However, following the events of Saturday night, the NCAA Women’s Tournament cannot make the same claim.

In addition to Notre Dame being upset, the South Carolina Gamecocks were the No. 1 seed in the Sioux Falls Region and they cruised through their first two games of the tournament and right into their Sweet 16 matchup against Syracuse on Friday night. While No. 4 seed Syracuse is a good team, there were few people expecting them to knock off the Gamecocks, one of the legitimate heavyweight contenders in the field.

Well, those people ended up being pretty wrong. On Friday night, Syracuse pulled off the stunner as they knocked the No. 1 Gamecocks right out of the tournament with an 80-72 win. They had to play virtually their best game of the season to get the job done, and they were able to put it all together to shock the country.

In the win, Syracuse got a phenomenal performance from Alexis Peterson, who finished the game with a team-high 25 points. When you’re locked in like that, there’s a good chance you’re going to drop the top seed in the region. Next up in points for Syracuse was Brianna Butler, who dropped in 18 with 10 of them coming in the fourth quarter of the win.

Next up for Syracuse now will be the winner of Tennessee and Ohio State. For a full look at the bracket with South Carolina going down now, just simply click here.
