Virginia guard Darius Thompson caught a bit of luck early in their Elite Eight matchup against Syracuse
The Virginia Cavaliers and Syracuse Orange were two teams familiar with one another as ACC opponents as they entered their matchup in the Elite Eight of 2016 March Madness on Sunday night. However, the Cavaliers seemingly had a tremendous advantage coming into the game and they showed it early. Not only were they the more talented team, but guys like Darius Thompson were also getting a bit lucky.
With Virginia already ahead by nine points, the Cavaliers were on the fast break with the sophomore guard in Thompson coming down the right side of the floor. The pass from the top of the break went out to Thompson and the guard drove in to try and get a shot close to the rim. As he went up, though, two defenders forced him to essentially toss up a prayer. Things were breaking Virginia’s way so majorly that the shot fell through the net:
"HOW did this go in???? https://t.co/YRTN1jvVeM— CBS Sports (@CBSSports) March 27, 2016"
That Virginia player on the bench shrugging his shoulders after the fact basically says all that you need to know about that circus shot from Darius Thompson falling. There’s no way that shot should ever go in, but sometimes it’s just your night.
Thompson’s miracle on this play pushed the Virginia lead to 11 points and only further set the tone to where they were clearly in the driver’s seat in this matchup.
