MLB Opening Day 2016 is approaching and here are very early favorites to win the MVP award.

MLB Opening Day is right around the corner and it’s time to start picking World Series favorites and teams who’re going to make the playoffs. The start of the season can be a bit slow for those who don’t follow the sport closely, but getting off on the right foot is imperative for contenders.

Many teams wouldn’t be able to make playoff pushes if not for their star players. Guys like Bryce Harper and Josh Donaldson are absolute game-changers, but neither was able to bring their respective team to the World Series and the former couldn’t even lead the Nationals to the playoffs. Still, though, both won league MVP awards.

You can bet that those two will be lead candidates in the race once again this year, but the elite talent from both leagues will give them a run for their money. Do you think Harper and Donaldson will repeat as National and American League MVPs, respectively?

It doesn’t necessarily have to be the league’s young guns who take home the coveted award — heck, it doesn’t even have to be an offensive player. A pitcher has won twice since 2011, and before that it hadn’t been done since 1992.

Here are the top five MVP candidates, combined from both leagues, to start the 2016 season. Let us know if you agree or disagree with any, or if we missed anyone major, in the comment section below.

Next: 5. Josh Donaldson, Blue Jays
