STP 500 2016: Brad Keselowski, Denny Hamlin caught speeding on pit road
By Phil Naegely
The first set of pit road spots at the STP 500 saw two drivers, Brad Keselowski and Denny Hamlin, nabbed for speeding at Martinsville Speedway.
Short track racing has a lot of different nuances than normal NASCAR Sprint Cup Series tracks. One of the differences is pit road and the 30 mph speed limit than will make drivers appear that they are moving as slow as a turtle. Brad Keselowski and Denny Hamlin were the first two drivers nabbed for pit road infractions at the STP 500 for speeding.
Each week NASCAR drivers will push the limit to try to gain any advantage they can on pit road. However, when drivers go over the speed limit on pit road it can cost them especially on the short track. Keselowski and Hamlin basically have no chance to win the STP 500 after their infractions. It’s also not the first time the driver duo have been caught speeding down pit road.
Luckily, both drivers have already one a race this season. This means that unless something crazy occurs throughout the season, they have made the chase and will have their chance of being the top dog when the final chase race ends. One of those races will occur at Martinsville Speedway in the Fall, so both need to be mindful of how fast their car is going. If they don’t, then they could destroy their chances of finding success in the chase.
For now though, both drivers served their speeding penalty and are no longer on the lead lap. There’s still a lot of laps left to go in the STP 500, but Keselowski and Hamlin have a slim chance to end up winning the grandfather clock on Sunday.
