A look back at the five best draft picks made by the Dallas Cowboys throughout their history

With the NFL Draft rapidly approaching, we can have fun not just looking forward to what our favorite teams may do, but also looking back at what they have done in the past when it comes to drafting.

Championship teams are built primarily through the draft, which means for a team with five Super Bowl trophies in their pocket, they must have made some excellent picks. That’s certainly the case with the Dallas Cowboys.

Throughout their 56 years of existence this team has surely made some solid moves on draft day. Narrowing it down to the five best wasn’t as easy of a task as it may seem. Sure, in recent years they’ve made more headlines for the moves that didn’t work out, but these five choices are ones that helped shaped their illustrious, and trophy-filled history.

Before we get started with the list, here are some honorable mentions that just missed the cut:

Darren Woodson, safety, 2nd round selection (37th overall) in 1992

Larry Allen, guard, 2nd round pick (46th overall) in 1994

Rayfield Wright, 7th round pick (182nd overall) in 1967

Emmitt Smith, 1st round pick (17th overall) in 1990

We could go on all day naming more honorable mentions for this team, but those were the three that just missed the cut here. So with all that said, let’s get started with number five.
