Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green thinks the team may be distracted chasing 73 regular season wins.
The Golden State Warriors entered Tuesday’s game against the Minnesota Timberwolves with a record of 69-8, just four wins away from breaking the record set by the 1995-96 Chicago Bulls.
The path to 73 got a bit harder after the Warriors lost in overtime to the Timberwolves. The loss was the Warriors second home loss of the season, but more importantly, it means the team cannot lose any of its last four games for the record to be broken.
That will be difficult as the last four games see the Warriors taking on the Spurs and Grizzlies twice.
Draymond Green spoke after last night’s loss and revealed some things fans may have already expected.
When asked if chasing down the Chicago Bulls NBA record of 72 wins is taking a toll on the team he said, via ESPN.com’s Ethan Sherwood Strauss, “Honestly? Yes.” Then he corrected himself, “I wouldn’t necessarily say caught up in the hype.”
“It’s human nature to where, all right, kind of ready for the regular season to end,” Green said. “Talking 82 games, we get bored with that after a while. And that’s no excuse, just, I always give it to y’all real, and that’s about as real as I can be. It’s kind of at a point now where you’re ready for the regular season to be over.”
There are those who may say Green and the Warriors should be focused on reaching 73 wins, but that record means nothing if the team does not win another NBA title, which should be every team’s ultimate goal each season.
Whether the Warriors win 73 games or not, the players must focus on resting up before the playoffs begin instead of getting burned out and not being ready for the extensive NBA playoff season.
The Warriors will be helped on their quest for 73 wins as the Spurs may be doing some resting of their own, while the Grizzlies are 1-6 in their last seven games.
The Warriors are the NBA’s top team by far, so this record would be nice to reach, but it will not change the team’s title chances.
