LSU officials are studying what changes can be made for football tailgates to help reduce binge drinking.
It’s one of the places in college football that makes the sport so much fun. Baton Rouge, Louisiana at night can be one of the craziest places in college football as LSU Tigers night games get rowdy and loud in part thanks to fans (both students and grown folk) get a chance to spend the entire day enjoying a couple of adult beverages.
In recent years, the school has dealt with more issues involving student drinking at football tailgates. The school is now considering some options that will be put in place in an attempt to reduce the amount of student binge drinking and intoxication before they head into the stadium, according to the Baton Rouge (LA) Advocate:
"Among the proposals: no more glass bottles, no drinking games, no funnels, no beer kegs or alcoholic party punches, no couches, TVs or indoor furniture and no tents more than 10 feet by 10 feet. These proposals would only affect LSU students who tailgate as part of a student organization ranging from everyone from the LSU biology club to the LSU Law School, and of course — sororities and fraternities."
Schools officials say they are just gathering information and input from all involved before presenting any proposals to President F. King Alexander.
One proposal involves having a vendor come in and serve student groups who register with the school. That plan was attacked by students at a meeting on campus, saying the school is using them as an excuse to make money.
The changes would be for students only, leaving alumni and other fans free to get as drunk, rowdy and violent as they want to before the Tigers take the field. Students who aren’t a part of recognized groups on campus wouldn’t have to register either, something that has fraternities and other groups furious.
LSU opens their 2016 football home schedule on September 10 when they host Jacksonville State, one of seven home games inside Tiger Stadium this year.
