NFL Draft Rumors: Cowboys, Chargers trading for Paxton Lynch?
Could the San Diego Chargers or Dallas Cowboys trade up for quarterback Paxton Lynch?
Memphis Tigers quarterback Paxton Lynch has been getting a bit of attention as a potential first round target for several NFL teams that need quarterbacks. Two teams that have been recently tied to the Memphis product are the San Diego Chargers and the Dallas Cowboys. While both teams have a top five pick in the first round, they have also both expressed interest in trading back into the first round to grab him.
“If they don’t want to pull the trigger on a (Carson) Wentz or a (Jared) Goff, now you come back around in the second round [to draft Lynch],” Mike Mayock said Wednesday, via NFL.com. “Would either of them trade up into the first round to try and get that fifth year of a contract, and develop this young man in a perfect situation behind either a (Philip) Rivers or a (Tony) Romo?”
That’s an intriguing idea, and one that would make sense for both the Cowboys and the Chargers. While Rivers and Romo are both franchise quarterbacks, both are aging. Rivers will turn 35 years old in December and Romo will turn 36 on April 21. Paxton Lynch is a developmental project who likely needs to sit on the sideline for at least the next two seasons. While drafting someone like Lynch in the late first round is certainly a gamble, that option for a fifth year could be very attractive to both teams.
