Indianapolis Colts: 2016 7-round NFL mock draft
By John Buhler
While safety isn’t a primary need for the Colts entering the 2016 NFL Draft, it is still a premium position in this era of the NFL. With offenses becoming increasingly reliant on moving the chains aerially, might the Colts take one of the many strong safety prospects that will be available in the middle of the second round?
One such prospect is West Virginia Mountaineers senior strong safety Karl Joseph, who the Colts could nab at No. 48 to help bolster their club defensively in the secondary. While Joseph did tear his ACL during practice back in October, causing him to miss much of his senior season in Morgantown, he already accomplished a lot playing for the Mountaineers in his first three collegiate seasons.
Joseph is described as a player that loves contact and was one of the most physical defensive backs in the Big 12 in college. That will help a Colts defense that besides defensive back Vontae Davis has been at times toothless in the Pagano era in Indianapolis.
His size at 5’10” may take Joseph off some teams draft boards, but if he’s willing to play with the hunger after missing his senior season at West Virginia as he begins his NFL career, the Colts might have a Bob Sanders type of player in their secondary if they take Joseph at No. 48. However, let’s hope that Joseph doesn’t have as bad of luck with regards to injuries in the NFL as did Sanders when he was with the Colts.
