A look at Rory McIlroy’s highlights from The Masters Round 1
It’s not easy golfing at Augusta National, even when you’re the No. 3 ranked player in the world.
Rory McIlroy’s four birdies and four bogeys showed just what a wild ride a round at Augusta can be. But his up-and-down round also included this spectacular eagle on the par-5 13th to move him to 3-under, at the time just three off the lead, reminding everyone what McIlroy can do when his putter is working.
A birdie at the par-5 15th moved McIlroy to four under…
But bogeys at 16 and 18 proved costly, as he slipped from second to ninth place. His frustrations with his two late bogeys clearly showed. McIlroy can be seen shaking his head while running his fingers through his hair before angrily tossing his putter on top of his golf bag.
It has been five years since McIlroy’s epic collapse on the final day of the Masters, when he blew a four-shot lead on his way to an eight over par 80. He has tried to do things differently this year, he’s said, even skipping the par-3 contest to fully concentrate on winning the last tournament of his elusive career Grand Slam.
Currently McIlroy is at 2 under 70. He is in a group of 11 players within four shots of leader Jordan Spieth, who shot an opening round 66.
