Could the Phoenix Suns pry Jay Wright away from Villanova?

Even though Villanova was a No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament, it was still surprising to see them surge to a national championship win. Thanks to his coaching, Jay Wright has gone from being the man of the hour at Nova to the possible man of the future in the NBA.

Per usual when a college head coach gets white hot like Wright is, the NBA rumors aren’t far behind.

According to Mitch Lawrence from The Sporting News, the Phoenix Suns will be making Wright their top head coaching target this summer.

There’s no guarantee at all that Wright will bolt from Nova to take an NBA job — let alone one with the lowly Suns. There will be a handful of possible head coaching openings in the offseason ranging jobs in Minnesota to Los Angeles and possibly New York. There might be a likely chance that Wright could coach his hometown Sixers, keeping him close to Nova and in the same area where he has a family.

It’s a nice idea that the Suns want to target Wright but they’re probably way low on the list of teams he’d be willing to coach. This is, of course, assuming that Wright would even be interested in leaving Nova. We heard similar rumors about UConn head coach Kevin Ollie leaping to the NBA a few years ago and he went nowhere — ditto with Shaka Smart, Tom Izzo and so many others.

Wright will no doubt be linked to jobs all over the NBA, but let’s not jump to conclusions about his future too early.
