NFL Rumors: Denver Broncos talking with Johnny Manziel
The Denver Broncos are exploring a variety of options at quarterback and one of those options is Johnny Manziel.
The Denver Broncos, after losing quarterback Brock Osweiler to the Houston Texans in free agency, have been scrambling to find a starting quarterback for the 2016 season.
Even after trading for Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Mark Sanchez, the Broncos have talked to a variety of quarterbacks. One of those options is former Cleveland Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter who reports Kubiak has spoken with the troubled quarterback.
Manziel would be an interesting fit with the Broncos. The Broncos have a quarterback-friendly offense that doesn’t necessarily need an elite quarterback to do well. Head coach Gary Kubiak runs a well-balanced offense that was efficient even when led by an aging Peyton Manning and like Manziel is a Texas A&M alum.
If the Broncos can’t work out a deal with the San Francisco 49ers to trade for Colin Kaepernick, at this point, Manziel might be the most attractive option other than Ryan Fitzpatrick.
Linebacker and Super Bowl MVP Von Miller has stood up for Manziel in the past and could sell the Broncos on the talented quarterback. While Manziel had constant issues in Cleveland, it’s worth noting that Manziel isn’t too far removed from being an incredible college quarterback and that he is only 23 years old.
The Broncos would likely have to wait and see what happens with Manziel’s recent legal issues, but if it works out that they can sign him, don’t be surprised if Johnny Football returns to being the hero that he was in college with Denver.
According to Mike Klis, the Broncos have no plans to sign the former Heisman Trophy winner and first round pick and NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport echoes those thoughts while confirming Schefter’s report Kubiak and Manziel did talk.
Manziel would have to accept a low salary and probably won’t be getting any guaranteed money considering his lack of production and legal troubles. If Manziel’s going to have success in the NFL, Denver is the most likely place that it’s going to happen because of their offense.
