A look at The Masters 2016 leaderboard after the first round of play

The Masters 2016 was always going to present big challenges for the golfers in the first Major Championship of the season. Sure, it’s a course that is unforgiving if you make too many minor errors, but on top of that Augusta National Golf Club was filled with some ridiculously tricky winds throughout the course that made low scores either hard to come by or quick to disappear on Thursday in Round 1.

However, the defending champion in Jordan Spieth was largely unaffected by this as he picked up right where he left off last year. With one of the earliest tee times on Thursday, the defending champ came out at a blistering pace to fire off a bogey-free round of 66. 6-under put Spieth in the outright lead and, with that early start, left everyone chasing him like they were last year when he finished The Masters at a record 18-under in earning the Green Jacket.

Spieth has some hefty competition not far behind him, though, as Rory McIlroy posted a great score to be just a couple of strokes off of the lead heading into Round 2. Moreover, World No. 1 Jason Day isn’t far behind—even with a rough back-nine that derailed a gorgeous start to the tournament for him.

After Round 1 at the 2016 Masters, here’s a look at the top of the leaderboard:

1. Jordan Spieth (-6)
T2. Danny Lee (-4)
T2. Shane Lowry (-4)
T4. Paul Casey (-3)
T4. Sergio Garcia (-3)
T4. Soren Kjeldsen (-3)
T4. Ian Poulter (-3)
T4. Justin Rose (-3)
T9. Billy Horschel (-2)
T9. Rory McIlroy (-2)
T9. Scott Piercy (-2)
T9. Danny Willett (-2)

Spieth is firmly in control, but we’ll see how things change as the wind looks to persist and things can always get wild this time of year at Augusta.
