Carson Palmer is one of the few guys on this list that have had successful careers, for the most part. The former USC gunslinger has had an interesting road to get where he is now, however, even going through a retirement from the NFL because he was refused a trade from the Cincinnati Bengals.

Palmer was not happy with his career in Cincinnati and the Bengals made the playoffs just twice in seven years, forcing him to want to play elsewhere for the love of the game. He just wasn’t enjoying football as much playing with the Bengals.

Even when he was with the Bengals, he suffered the first of multiple knee injuries. It happened during a playoff game in January of 2006 when a Steelers defender trying to bring him down by his leg after he had already released the ball. He left the game and returned the following year healthy.

The Bengals’ gunslinger would then play the entire 2006 and 2007 seasons without injury before 2008 when he competed in just four contests due to being hampered by a sore elbow.

Two more seasons passed with no problems and then in 2011, following his retirement, the Palmer was asked to come back to football and join the hapless Raiders. He played two seasons there before heading to Arizona in 2013.

It wasn’t until 2014 that his knee injuries resurfaced. Palmer tore his ACL and missed 10 games. At the age of 34, it looked like his career was just about over, but he made a solid comeback in 2015 and led the Cardinals to the playoffs.

Could you imagine if Palmer didn’t have problems with the Bengals that led to retirement and if his knees were 100 percent? Scary thought.
