Texas and Notre Dame are part of the huge opening weekend, but they’re separating from the rest of the pack
Now that the college basketball season has come to a close, there are a lot of people who have now turned their attention to the college football season which will be opening in a few months. Now while the opening college football weekend generally gives us some amazing marquee match ups to look forward to, the 2016 season is stacked with more than most.
However, two schools on Friday announced that while they’ll still be a part of the amazing opening weekend, they won’t be with the rest of the pack on Saturday.
The Texas Longhorns announced on Friday that their scheduled opening game against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish will now be taking place on Sunday, September 4 rather than Saturday, September 3 as originally planned. In the release, part of the reasoning given was to maximize the national reach.
Really, this was probably a really good move. The college football season always begins one week before the NFL gets underway, and while there are generally a few college football games on that Sunday of opening weekend, they’re not really ones to get all that excited about. Here, you’re taking two of the most well-known programs in the history of college football and giving them the stage all to themselves on Sunday, which will draw in a lot of casual football viewers.
These two teams played last season in South Bend, with Notre Dame coming away with the commanding 38-3 win.
