Arsene Wenger on Arsenal draw with West Ham: Overall it’s a shame

Arsene Wenger understandably isn’t too pleased after Arsenal’s draw on Saturday

Heading into Saturday and their showdown with West Ham United, Arsenal still had some title hopes in their sights. Well, those hopes may have come to a screeching halt after yet another embarrassing collapse here late in the season.

Arsenal had a 2-0 lead in the first half of this one and everything was looking just fine, but then the defensive side of things just went into complete breakdown mode again as they were torched by West Ham’s Andy Carroll. Carroll netted two goals at the end of the first half, and he added another header in the second half. Just like that, West Ham had a 3-2 lead. Arsenal would come back to tie with a goal from Laurent Koscielny, but that’s all they would get as they settled for the draw.

With the title hopes looking bleak now, Arsene Wenger called the match a shame following its conclusion.

"“We’ve shown resilience and spirit to come back to 3-3. In the last 20 mins it could have gone both ways. I’m disappointed we didn’t (have an answer to Andy Carroll).“I’m not here after the game to blame the players. We are disappointed to concede three goals. Particularly after 2-1. Overall it’s a shame.“Do we still have an opportunity to win the title? I don’t know. We made it more difficult today.”"

They have indeed made it difficult for themselves, but that seems to be the story with Arsenal for the better part of the last decade, doesn’t it? Just when it seems as if things might be a little easier, they go ahead and make it about as hard as can be.

He’s not wrong in saying that the Premier League title hopes for the club aren’t completely gone, but the rest of the way it’s going to be anything but simple to catch the trophy.
