Updated Premier League Table: Man City get big three points
By David Rouben
In the latest Premier League table, Manchester City helped to distance themselves from fifth place with a win over West Bromwich.
At the start of the season, everyone was quick to proclaim Manchester City as the favorites to capture the title. They came firing out of the gate to start with five straight clean sheets, but since then they have slipped.
Sergio Aguero fell victim to the injury bug, as he is known to do, as well as their latest acquisition Kevin de Bruyne. And along the way, they have dropped important games to teams ahead of them, such as Tottenham and Arsenal, as well as losing a critical Manchester Derby last time.
While it wasn’t pretty, they got the job done against West Bromwich with a 2-1 win that puts themselves a full four points against fifth-place Manchester United to help solidify their place in the Champions League next year, courtesy of PremierLeague.com.
Ever since it was announced that Pep Guardiola would take over as manager at the end of January, the team has looked distracted and out-of-sorts, but they cannot afford to fall out of the top four and have Guardiola manage a Europa League team.
The win also puts the Citizens two points back of Arsenal, whose 3-3 draw with West Ham dealt a critical blow to their title hopes. There’s still a lot of time for Manchester City to surpass Arsenal and have them fall back to their familiar spot at fourth place.
And of course, that draw also ensures that Leicester City, this season’s greatest story, continues to stay comfortably atop the league standings. While their play at the beginning of the season was characterized by breathtaking attacking displays, they have grinded their way to 1-0 results in their last four matches. That’s because they grasp a concept that Arsenal fail to understand, which is that it’s about results over style of play.
They will have a chance to go 10 points clear at the top against Sunderland, although that’s not a game to take lightly — they are fighting to stay in the Premier League next season, so it will be an important game for them too.
While there would still be five games to go, a win on Sunday would surely cement Leicester’s status as Premier League champions.
